Which countries are attracting the most transferees?

While the United States is still the world’s top destination for relocation, there are still many companies relocating employees to work in Europe. A recent study of large corporations, that included the data of over 160,000 relocations covering 150 countries, revealed the Top 5 European Relocation Destinations for relocation.

#1 – United Kingdom
It is no surprise that the UK tops the list again. It’s long presence as a world financial center and home to headquarters of many large global companies makes the UK the leader in importing assignees and new hires. The fact that it is an English-speaking country allows for an easy transition for transferees from most countries. Cities like Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, and London are top destinations for relocation assignments.

#2 – Switzerland
Switzerland has one of the highest standards of living in the world. Home to the headquarters of many Fortune 500 corporations like Zurich Insurance, Novartis, UBS AG, and, of course, Nestle, this small nation is big on jobs. The four official languages of Switzerland are French, German, Italian, and Romansh. However, some say the fifth, though unofficial, language is English, Transferees on assignment from the United States should have no problem conversing and conducting business in Switzerland.

Germany’s job market is strong and the country’s working conditions are very good. The much-prized apprenticeship program has helped keep youth unemployment down. In contrast to many other countries, vocational education is properly valued in Germany and manual professions are considered equally prestigious as desk jobs. Germany is well-structured country with specific rules which makes living and working very organized. However, life is not all toil in the country. Germans know how to have fun, too. The country boasts an excellent work-life balance. Currently, Dresden has outpaced Berlin as the hot real estate location.

Ireland is leading the tech boom in Europe. Practically all of the biggest tech and pharma companies in the world, including Google, Facebook, Apple, and Twitter, have their European HQs in Ireland. People in Ireland take their vacations seriously. It is customary for companies to offer 20 days of annual leave and they really want employees to use them. Housing is available for any budget. Those coming from the United States will feel very little culture shock as the people in Ireland are extremely accommodating and speak English. This beautiful country boasts great festivals, manic sports fans, and world-class educational institutions. Dublin is rapidly becoming a strong economic center, not only for Europe, but for the world.

Canada Making Changes to Citizen Act

Are you ready for the changes to the Canada Citizen Act?

The following information is important to all human resource and mobility managers that work in Canada and are looking to hire and relocate talent from other countries. This does not pertain to short-term assignments during which an employee might simply retain the citizenship of their country of origin. This matters to those who you will be onboarding for full-time work in Canada and where the employee hopes to make a permanent home in your country.

What has changed?

Fundamental changes to the Canada Citizen Act (or “Citizenship Act”) were announced on June 19, 2017. The changes were made to reduce previously existing barriers to citizenship and eliminate potential differential treatment of dual citizens. Certain changes will be effective immediately, whereas others will be implemented later on this year.

Who is affected?

  • Dual citizens in Canada
  • Individuals applying to Canada for citizenship, including minors without a Canadian parent

What to expect

Highlights of the immediate changes include:

  • Dual citizens living in Canada who are convicted of crimes such as treason, spying, and terrorism offences will no longer face revocation and will instead be subject to the criminal justice system, as with all Canadian citizens who face criminal charges
  • Intention to continue to live in Canada once granted citizenship is no longer required, thereby allowing citizens flexibility and movement for personal reasons
  • Minors can now apply for citizenship without a Canadian parent, as the age requirement for citizenship has been removed
  • Statelessness has been added as a stand-alone ground that can be considered for a discretionary grant of citizenship
  • Reasonable measures to accommodate the needs of persons with disabilities will now be considered
  • Citizenship will not be granted to individuals serving conditional sentences

Changes Expected to Take Effect in Fall 2017

  • Applicants must be physically present in Canada for three (3) out of five (5) years before applying for citizenship (as opposed to four (4) out of six (6) under the previous policy)
  • Applicants must file Canadian income taxes for three (3) out of five (5) years (as opposed to four (4) out of six (6) under the previous policy)
  • Applicants are no longer required to be physically present in Canada for 183 days in four (4) out of the six (6) years preceding their application
  • Applicants may count each day they were physically present in Canada prior to becoming a permanent resident as a half-day toward meeting the physical presence requirement for citizenship, up to a maximum credit of 365 days
  • Applicants between fourteen (14) and fifty-four (54) years must meet the language and knowledge requirements for citizenship (as opposed to eighteen (18) to sixty-four (64) under the previous policy)

50 U.S. Cities with the Most New Jobs

Big opportunities in relatively small towns. 

With unemployment near a ten-year low and new jobs surpassing monthly expectations, one might be wondering, “Where are all of these opportunities, what are the 50 US cities with the most jobs?”

In an article for msn.com this July, writer Michael B. Sauter composed a comprehensive list of the top 50 cities for job growth in the United States. The data was tracked from 2012 through 2017 and details the percentage of employment increase, the number of new jobs, the industry (excluding agriculture) contributing most to the growth in opportunities, as well as other key factors.

The top ten cities experienced job growth from 18% to over 30%. Here is a sampling of the top ten cities from Mr. Sauter’s article:

Not surprising, early 50% of the cities on the comprehensive list were from states that have the highest inbound relocation activity1. Fort Myers, FL earned the number one spot on a list of the top U.S. cities for relocation, as posted by US News & World Report.
