Companies That Care About Employee Benefits Invest in International Relocation Services

Don’t let your company start on the wrong foot with new employees; here’s why providing international relocation services is important

If you are a human resources executive or hiring manager, you should know how hard it is to interview and hire for open positions. Often, it can take months just to get enough interviews on the books in hopes of finding one qualified candidate. But did you know that opening your job search to those in different states and other countries can get you more qualified candidates faster?

In many cases, HR managers will try to fill the role with applicants who live locally. Widening the search gives you a better chance of getting the right person in the right seat. Conversely, the company must offer relocation assistance to get an employee to move for a job.

If your company doesn’t offer international relocation services, don’t worry. At Global Mobility Solutions, we hear daily about companies declining to provide relocation benefits to new employees. However, offering relocation services has many advantages.

Main Advantages of Employee Relocation Benefits

One of the main advantages of offering relocation programs is that it allows your company to tap into a larger talent pool. By opening up your job search to candidates from different states and countries, you are no longer limited to the local talent pool. This means you can access broader skills, experiences, and perspectives.

Additionally, offering employees relocation options can be a significant selling point for potential candidates. Many job seekers need some form of financial support to move. By providing relocation services, you show candidates that you value their talent and are willing to invest in their success.

Moreover, offering global mobility services can also help with employee retention. Moving to a new city or country can be a daunting experience, and having support from the company can make a big difference. By assisting with finding housing, navigating the local area, and settling in, you are helping your employees feel more comfortable and supported in their new environment. This, in turn, can lead to higher job satisfaction and increased loyalty to the company.

Offering Moving Assistance Shows Your Company Cares; Opens Talent Pool

Furthermore, offering international relocation benefits can also enhance your company’s reputation. Word spreads quickly in the job market, and if your company is known for providing relocation assistance, it can attract top talent looking for opportunities to grow and develop in their careers.

While it may require some investment upfront, offering relocation services can bring numerous benefits to your company. From accessing a larger talent pool to improving employee retention and enhancing your company’s reputation, the advantages far outweigh the costs. So, consider expanding your job search and providing relocation aid to attract the best candidates and ensure the long-term success of your organization.

By covering some of the relocation costs, you can prove to new and current employees that the company cares about the culture and has the right person in the right seat.

Many individuals find relocating for a job daunting. The thought of uprooting their lives, finding a new home, and adjusting to a new environment can be overwhelming. However, when a company offers relocation assistance, it not only eases the burden on the employee but also demonstrates a commitment to their well-being and success.

One key advantage of providing global mobility programs to employees is the ability to tap into a larger talent pool. By expanding the job search beyond local candidates, companies can attract highly skilled individuals from different regions or countries. This opens possibilities and allows for a diverse workforce with unique perspectives and experiences.

Moreover, offering these moving programs can significantly improve employee retention. When employees feel supported during the transition, they are more likely to stay with the company for the long term. Relocation can be a significant life change, and knowing that their employer is invested in their success can foster loyalty and commitment.

Additionally, providing relocation services can enhance a company’s reputation. Word-of-mouth travels fast, and when employees share positive experiences about their relocation process, it can attract top talent. Potential candidates will see the company as one that values its employees and is willing to go the extra mile to ensure their happiness and growth.

Of course, offering relocation benefits has costs. However, the benefits far outweigh the initial investment. By covering some relocation expenses, companies show that they care about their employees’ well-being and are willing to invest in their success. This can create a positive company culture and foster a sense of belonging among employees.

In conclusion, providing employee relocation programs is a strategic move for any company looking to attract and retain top talent, Expand job search, and offer support during the move. Companies can access a larger talent pool, improve employee retention, enhance their reputation, and ensure their organization’s long-term success. So, don’t hesitate to invest in relocation services and show your employees they are valued team members.

How to Get an IMM 5257 Visitor Visa

Visitor Visa (Temporary Work Visa) in Canada

If you aren’t a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada but have plans of relocating up north, there are a few options you have for visas. First, you can come to Canada on vacation; you can come to see family or conduct some manner of business in Canada. Your stay is restricted, and you need to follow some rules. and one of them might be that you need a visa, especially if you plan to work in Canada.

These IMM 5257 visas will be significant for you to enjoy your stay in Canada, and they are also a little complicated to get. Are there certain visas and government documents those applying need? Thankfully, rather than dealing with the headaches that can arise when you try to get a visa alone, you can work with a full-service relocation company that can assist with all the hardships of applying for the IMM 5257. Check out the rest of this article to get all the help you need.

What Temporary Work Visas Can You Get?

There are two different types of work visas that you can apply for. The first is an employer-specific work permit that allows you to work in Canada while you follow the conditions on the license. These conditions include the name of the employer you can work for, how long you can work, and sometimes where you can work.

You will also need a full copy of your employment contract and the offer of employment number or a copy of the labor market impact assessment. This can be useful if a specific employer in Canada already hires you and is entering the country to work a particular job.

An Open Work Permit allows you to work for any employer in Canada during your stay, except for those on the list of blacklisted employees.

Additionally, you may need a medical exam if you have lived in certain territories or countries for 6 months or more or have applied to come to Canada within one year. Additionally, suppose you plan to work in certain occupations (such as in the field of healthcare, with children, or within agriculture occupations). In that case, you will need a medical exam no matter what.

You will not need a medical exam if you want to work in Canada for six months or less and do not meet any of the above conditions. Once you have your work visa and all the paperwork from your employer, you can begin the application process.

Using an IMM 5257 PDF Template

Having a template to work off of can be a lifesaver, especially with government documents. You need to work off of an IMM 5257 PDF Template, and one that is correct and fully updated. Then, you can confidently fill in the blanks and submit your information correctly. No worries, no fuss, and you can work in Canada as long as your other documents are handled correctly.

How To Apply For A Temporary Work Visa

You can apply for a temporary work visa online and must submit various forms. These can include but are not limited to IMM 1295 – Application for Work Permit Made Outside of Canada. Schedule 1 – Application for Temporary Resident Visa. Family Information Form IMM 5645.

Additionally, you will need a valid passport, two applicable photos of yourself, police record certificates, and bank statements proving you have enough funds to remain in Canada while having enough funds to return home, and your resume. If you bring your spouse and family members with you, you will also need extra documents for them.

Now, all of this can be extremely overwhelming, and if you make a mistake, forget to include a document, or have another problem happen, you will need to start over. That can be a massive problem, especially if you have a job that can’t wait.

Can I Extend My Temporary Work Visa?

If your work permit is still valid, then you can extend it. Whether you have fallen in love with the job, the country, the food, or the people, you can extend your temporary work visa while in Canada as long as you meet the following conditions.

You must make any changes, alterations, or extensions at least 30 days before the visa expires, and you can’t extend your work permit beyond the expiration date of your passport. However, other than those conditions, extending your temporary work visa is pretty straightforward. Whatever drew you to Canada, you can continue experiencing it until your passport expires.

No matter what you plan to do, you can get a temporary work visa in Canada. Just make sure you get the steps right the first time!

The Challenges of International Corporate Relocation

Use this international relocation guide to overcome some of the common challenges

The international corporate relocation process can be a daunting venture. It requires extensive planning and coordination to get employees to their new home country. For growing companies, relocating employees abroad has become an all-too-familiar task. From efficient shipping protocols to secure job placement services upon arrival, the complexities of the global mobility process must involve a strategic approach. For this reason, today, we will discuss the challenges of international corporate relocation. We will assess the steps you must take to overcome these challenges to seamlessly get employees from point A to point B.

1. Paying Suppliers Internationally

Managing international relocation for a business involves countless vendors, often requiring payment across different countries and currencies. This creates numerous logistical challenges. The main one is, finding secure methods to pay local suppliers abroad and ensuring the payments are authorized. However, many relocation management companies have recently expanded the number of digital payments they support. This means that nowadays, it’s much less of a hassle to go through this process than it was in the past. As long as you are working with a reputable vendor, you don’t have to fear potential payment delays or have any security concerns.

2. Language Barriers

When moving abroad, language barriers can be a considerable challenge. This can be an issue even in countries where English is relatively widespread. Therefore, business owners need to consider the complexities that nuances and culture bring to the table when relocating. As a company owner, you must be aware of these potential differences and prepared to address them if necessary by providing employees and their families with language training. This is the only way to guarantee a successful corporate relocation. That being said, while reliable translation services can help minimize issues with language, businesses shouldn’t stop there. Depending on where you are relocating your company, offering extensive employee training may be necessary. Furthermore, one of the work productivity tips is to enable your employees to learn and speak a new language. This is one of the best ways to stay productive as they assimilate into their new environment.

3. Cultural Differences

Navigating cultural differences often poses the biggest challenge for businesses undergoing international relocation. Different countries have different cultures and customers. As we’ve mentioned, this includes language barriers but doesn’t end there. It also includes religious differences, social etiquette, and more. These things can create difficulties for companies settling into a new community. As such, businesses need to educate their staff on the culture of their new destination. Companies must also ensure that their relocation policies align with local societal norms. Furthermore, pairing up with experienced consultants familiar with the local culture is crucial. This will ensure a smooth transition.

4. Immigration, Tax, and Legal Issues

The legal and tax implications of relocating a business or employees internationally can be confusing and complex. Professional guidance and assistance are often necessary to ensure nothing goes wrong once the company settles in. That being said, professionals can help companies navigate local regulations and compliance requirements of domestic and international tax systems. Additionally, company owners, as well as their employees, must consider any current permits or visas that are necessary for residence in the new country. This also includes consideration for their existing financial obligations. For this reason, thoughtful planning and research are key. Therefore, if you are moving your company, plan ahead and figure out as much as you can before you get into the relocation process.

How to Ensure a Successful International Corporate Relocation

As we’ve said, there is no better way of ensuring a successful international corporate relocation than planning ahead. This is a huge process, and it may necessitate months of preparation. As an employer, you need to develop relocation policies around short-term housing options, relocation allowances, visa applications, and various other aspects of relocation. The goal is to make global mobility as easy as possible for your team. If you fail to do this, you may have issues with employees accepting an international assignment. Offering your employees help will make them feel comfortable in the new environment. However, once the relocation is over, you should also help your employees transfer funds and open bank accounts. Adequate preparation and policies in place will not only make for a successful move but will also help maintain morale and productivity during the period of transition.

International Relocation Assignment: Hassle or Major Career Benefit?

Is Accepting a relocation assignment from your job suitable for your career or more trouble than it's worth?

Working in an organization with multiple locations throughout the country or internationally can be a great way to get a well-rounded career. But often, these companies with offices in various parts of the world will ask their rising star employees to relocate for a new position or to help propel a different branch. These international relocation assignments might be permanent or can be short-term.

The question becomes whether relocating for a job is worth it or just a major hassle. In most cases, the short answer is that it is worth accepting the relocation assignment for numerous reasons. It can open the door to different positions within the company and give you experience that can look great on any resume. But like anything else, there are some challenges when relocating for a job.

What to Consider Before Accepting a Relocation Assignment

When your job gives you an offer letter for a new position that requires relocating, it is always a good idea to ask about pay, job title, job duties, etc. But it is also worth asking upfront what kind of relocation package the company will provide for you if any. If the company does not offer relocation benefits or reimbursement, moving for a new position might be challenging and not worth it.

Companies that provide comprehensive relocation packages do so to make accepting the assignment a no-brainer decision. Most relocation assistance programs include help with the following:

Shipment of Household Goods

Packing and transporting your belongings to your new destination is a massive part of the moving process. If the company is willing to provide a moving company to assist with this, it will make the relocation process much easier for you. It should be noted, though, that it is common for companies to reimburse for moving costs. While this isn’t the end of the world, and might not be a deal breaker, what this does mean is you will be on your own for packing and shipping your household goods. Then the company will pay you back for all, or most, of the expenses of hiring the moving company.

Corporate Housing

Also known as short-term housing options, this benefit is much more important for a short-term relocation assignment but can also come into play for a permanent position move. Corporate housing is a place to live while you’re on assignment for 14-90 days. It is more important for short-term work assignments because no one wants to buy a home or pay to rent an apartment for as long as needed. If the company has a corporate housing setup, it will usually be an apartment or condo to live in while you work at the new destination.

As mentioned, corporate housing options can also come into play for permanent relocation assignments. Often, the transferee can utilize corporate housing for a short period while they decide where to buy a home in their new destination.

Family Support and Cultural Training

If you are looking into taking a permanent position in a new destination, ask your company how they can help with family support or cultural training. This is especially vital if you are taking on a global assignment. Ask if there are programs such as career services for spouses or special school programs for children. And of course, if it is an international relocation, ask about language training.

GMS Believes Accepting a Relocation Assignment Is a Great Career Move

Global Mobility Solutions (GMS) has been helping companies relocate their employees for over 30 years, so we have seen firsthand how fast an employee’s career can grow when accepting a relocation assignment. But the employee will only succeed if supported with the right relocation benefits. On average, we have consistently urged companies to review and update their relocation packages every 12 to 16 months.

When reviewing your employee relocation benefits, set up a free consultation with one of our relocation experts. We are one of the best international moving companies in the world. Our team will listen to your wants and needs, then help you create relocation benefits that will ensure a smooth relocation process for your employees, hoping they will succeed for your company.

How to Prepare International Transferees for U.S. Home Purchase

Here are some tips for international employees to use when looking to buy a home in the U.S.

Moving to a new country for a new job can be a lot of work. Preparing the family for the move, finding a place to live, ensuring all visa documents are accounted for, etc. There is a lot that goes into international relocation. As many people know, purchasing a home is one of the lengthiest parts of the relocation process. The home-buying process can be extended, and those not used to real estate regulations in the US will find it even more confusing.

For those relocating to the US for a job on an H1-B visa or even those looking to buy a home to live in a while on a long-term international assignment, the standard process for buying a home in the US differs significantly from most countries in Asia or Europe.

The first and most crucial step when preparing to move overseas is to review your international relocation package provided by your employer carefully. See what relocation benefits your new company offers, then ask how to utilize each. Many international relocation service providers will help companies create unique benefits for each transferee. And in most cases, relocation benefits include home-buying programs that can help in a significant way, both process-wise and financially.

With that said, here are a few things to keep in mind when purchasing a home if you are relocating to the U.S. for work:

Visa & Immigration Documents Needed to Buy a Home in the U.S.

Working with a full-service relocation management provider can help immensely with visa and immigration documentation. They can help you file for the proper visa, in turn, they can also help you with which immigration documents you will need to apply for mortgage approval when buying a home in the U.S. Each mortgage lender will have different requirements when filling out applications, but among the most common documents needs are:

  • Valid foreign passport
  • U.S. visa and/or a driver’s license
  • Social security number or ITIN
  • Bank statements
  • Financial documentation from your foreign bank
  • Evidence of reserves
  • Paycheck stubs
  • Tax return for the last two or three years

Can International Transferees Buy a Property without a US Credit Score?

Yes. International buyers are eligible for loans from U.S. mortgage providers even if they do not have a U.S. credit history. In some cases, lenders even offer special programs for immigrants and non-resident buyers with no credit to get a competitive rate still. And some relocation management companies work with lenders to set up specialized programs for H1-B and L-1 visa holders.

Next Steps After Mortgage Approval

Once the international transferee has been approved for a mortgage from a U.S. brokerage, they know their realistic budget. From there, they should work with a real estate agent specializing in relocation home purchases. These relocation preferred real estate agents will know how to handle the transaction regarding closing date, move-in date, days to close, and other aspects that might vary from an international move.

Once a real estate agent is chosen, the transferee and agent can start working together on finding their dream home in the new destination. It’s worth checking your relocation package to see if your new company includes any house-hunting trips. These trips are usually a few days so that you can view homes with your real estate agent. It also serves as a time to check on international schools if relocating with children.

Once a budget and area are set, then comes time to start putting offers on houses that are appealing. Your real estate agent will help you arrange a competitive bid on a property, then assist in negotiating with the seller for a final price. Remember that relocation packages will often include home-buying programs that can help with closing costs and commissions.

After the Offer is Accepted

If your offer is accepted and the home inspection goes well, you are ready to start your relocation process. The typical closing window for a home sale in the U.S. is about 30-45 days. Once all your visa and immigration paperwork is filed and accepted, you can work with your relocation service provider to begin scheduling movers to assist with getting your household goods to the new destination. A reputable global mobility provider will provide a relocation coach who can help you every step of the way through the moving process.

Keep Taxes Top of Mind

The home buying process in the U.S. might present a different variety of taxes compared to what you are used to in your country. A few tax regulations to keep in mind when closing on a home include Capital Gains Tax, Withholding Tax, and State Property Tax.

Be sure to stay in the loop on all taxes due by asking your mortgage lender and real estate agent. If you are assigned a relocation expert to assist you in moving, they should have some insight into what taxes should be paid. They also might know of some tax breaks that can help you from buying a home.

These 4 Cities Are Now Expat Worker Hot Spots

Large numbers of foreign workers are relocating to these four cities

Since Covid-19 protocols heightened in 2020, numerous industries moved countless jobs into full-time remote settings. As a result, many companies found that productivity stayed leveled and grew for many employees across the board. So much so that now a good portion of positions are hired under full-time remote work policies

Now that employees are no longer expected to drive into an office daily, it changes their outlook on where to live. Digital nomads are relocating worldwide, taking advantage of being able to live anywhere by adventuring to new cities and countries they’ve always wanted to live in. Cities that have seen an enormous influx of remote workers relocate are now dubbed Zoom Towns

Zoom Towns are becoming more popular because expatriate employees (expats) looking for a new destination to live in find the traditional big cities that used to be known as technology leaders, such as Hong Kong and San Francisco, are crowded and expensive to live in. With the cost of living soaring in many major markets, expats looking for international relocation options are turning to less known growing Zoom Towns.

Here are four cities that are seeing significant increases in international relocation for employees looking for a new setting:

Kuala Lumpur

The Malaysian capital is becoming a hot spot for expat workers looking to relocate mainly because of its large English-speaking workforces and communities. On top of that, international transplants are finding Kuala Lumpur relatively affordable. In a 2021 worldwide survey of 12,000 expat workers, Internations ranked Kuala Lumpur No. 1 for affordable housing options.

Malaysia’s steady financial climate combined with the buzz of big city living can be a draw to many remote workers looking to move internationally. But if the big city feel isn’t a draw, the sightseeing outside the city of Kuala Lumpur has some of the most exotic landscapes to see only a day trip away.

Lisbon

One of the oldest European cities, Lisbon has a lot to offer in a mixture of culture, warm weather, and nightlife entertainment. This Portuguese city started seeing an increase in expat workers moving there after it became the host of Web Summit. This annual convention combines tech’s most prominent companies with leading speakers and top media outlets. It’s easy to do the math here; many of the people who attend Digital Summit fall in love with what Lisbon has to offer remote work positions. So, once they come and experience the city, it is top of mind when deciding where to live next.

Lisbon is an excellent choice because the medicine and education systems are well developed, while crime is low. Not to mention, the cost of living is lower than most other major European cities.

Mexico City

Mexico City is the largest city on this list, with nearly 22 million people currently living there. It might not seem like a go-to expat haven, but the city has rapidly been gaining both remote workers and in-office workers because it is the startup center of entrepreneurs in Latin America. The cost of living in Mexico compared to the US, Canadian, and most of Europe is much lower. Housing, food, and entertainment are all affordable year-round, making it an excellent place for young expat workers or newlyweds looking to start a family. Mexico City may be an old city, but it has a lot to offer for nightlife entertainment as it has one of the most vibrant restaurant cultures in the world.

Bengaluru (Bangalore)

One of the world’s fastest-growing tech hubs is Bengaluru, India. This growing Zoom Town is home to numerous startups and software firms. Major companies such as Sequoia Capital and Goldman Sachs have fueled the Bengaluru economy with money, making it a stable financial environment. With international relocation numbers, the city has numerous international schools, bars, and restaurants serving everything from craft beers to pork ribs.

GMS Can Assist Remote Workers Relocate

Now that countless workforce positions are completely remote-based, most companies won’t offer remote employees relocation benefits. This means for expats to head to their new destination, it’s all on their own when it comes to covering costs. But Global Mobility Solutions (GMS) has come up with a way to help remote employees receive the prices and services they would through relocation benefits without having to cost their company a penny.

Our new Employee Choice Program is designed to assist remote employees with access to vendor pricing from our network that they would generally have to get through their employer. Our program is here to assure that employees who cannot utilize a relocation package can still get fair pricing while still getting the top-level relocation service that GMS offers to all clients.

If you are interested in getting more information about our Employee Choice Program, please reach out today to schedule a quick call with one of our relocation experts. The GMS team is dedicated to providing excellent service and answering any questions you may have.

Providing Language Training Is Key for International Relocation

Companies with international relocation programs should include language training

When companies can interview and ultimately hire candidates from all over, it helps open up the talent pool. As a result, they have more options and a better chance of getting the right person in the right seat to get the job done. In addition, organizations that hire globally with regularity already know the importance of providing new hires with international relocation services

In most cases, companies will work with a relocation management company (RMC) to handle the creation and updates of these global mobility programs to assure that they can offer newly hired and promoted employees the best moving experience possible. Companies and relocating employees trust RMCs to handle everything from the pre-decision stages of the offer to the physical move to the new destination.

But one international relocation service that constantly gets overlooked is language training for the employee and their family. On top of that, very few RMCs have the resources and connections to include culture training.

Language training does not always include relocation packages because it is often overlooked by both the relocating employee and the company making the offer. The employee has a lot to worry about on their end during the negotiations from immigration needs, compensation, home buying and selling assistance, and the shipping of household goods. On the other hand, the company usually focuses more on the move’s timeline because they are anxious to get their new employee started on their job in an adequate time frame.

The Role of Language Training During Relocation

Sometimes, international relocation service providers will offer e-learning sessions when it comes to language training. For relocating employees and their families to adapt to their new destination, they need in-depth language learning opportunities. If the employee struggles to communicate with coworkers, it can be challenging to do their job. On the other hand, if employees have proper classes and resources for learning the new language, they are more likely to thrive in their new position.

Language training can also help out with the employee’s personal life. There’s no doubt that home life can negatively affect work life. If an employee is stressed or sad, it can hurt their work performance. And let’s not kid ourselves; the international relocation process can be tough on a family—another reason why language training should be included in their relocation package

If the relocating children can communicate, they are more likely to thrive in school and make friends quicker. The spouse or partner of the transferee also has a better opportunity to find a job. All of this assists the relocating employee while trying to help their family adapt to the new country.

GMS Offers Great Relocation Packages with Language Training

Global Mobility Solutions (GMS) understands what it takes to relocate an employee and help them thrive in their new setting. Over the last three decades, our team has been assisting companies in writing international relocation packages that greatly benefit the transferee and their family. Our relocation specialists help with every step, from learning about your business to helping create relocation packages to ensuring that transferees have everything they need to reach their final destination.

Taking a look at schooling options for international transplants

When an employee accepts an international assignment or position, they have to think about how their family will adapt to the new destination. One of the most stressful situations for a family moving overseas is the thought of school for the kids. Moving is hard enough on children, then add on learning a foreign language, and they are probably scared about making friends, fitting in, etc.

First and foremost, relocating families should do everything to get their children proper language training classes. It would be worth checking the relocation package as language classes can often be included. While looking into the relocation benefits, it is common for companies to provide family and spousal support programs. There could be good programs in the program to help family members adjust. After the move, the kids can start school.

Expat families heading to a foreign country will have plenty of questions regarding everyday life. However, one of the main questions that should be brought into the conversation should be, “what are the best education options for my children in our new country?”

Every family has different expectations and opinions on their children’s education needs. But it should be noted that there are a few options for education overseas. Of course, each option will have pros and cons, but doing what is best for each child is essential.

Option 1: Online Schooling from Home Country

Today’s technology offers numerous options for students to complete and submit assignments from anywhere. Since the Covid-19 pandemic, many families have turned to virtual learning as their primary education situation. However, there are pros to allowing children to do online school while living aboard.

First off, kids won’t have to be pushed into the deep end when learning a new language. If they are doing online school from their native country, they can do their assignments in their language while learning their new language at their own pace. This may help children feel more comfortable. It’s also possible that kids can keep in touch with classmates and teachers they like, helping ease the stress of a long-distance move.

The major con with this option is that it might take longer for kids to make friends and find activities to do in the new destination. In addition, online classes will require kids to be on the computer for most of the day, which means they might not have as much interaction with children their age. An excellent alternative to the cons of this option could be to enroll kids in local sports programs and other after-school activities.

It’s worth mentioning that homeschooling is always an option. The pros and cons are similar to online school, but with more added pressure and work for the parent(s) in charge of the kids’ schooling.

Option 2: Public School

If the children of the expat family already have a foundation in the new language, then the public school could be a great choice. In theory, attending a local school would make it easier for the kids to meet new friends and learn about fun, local activities. In addition, it would be a reasonable assumption that most local schools also have their language training classes to help the expat children understand more of the new language.

The apparent con with this option comes up if the relocating children minimally speak the local language. This can make it difficult for the new students to keep up in class and make friends. Not to mention adds an enormous amount of stress and public anxiety being in a school where it’s hard to understand teachers and other students.

Option 3: Enroll in a Private International School

It’s safe to say that the online school route is probably the most used by expat families for education options. But before the Covid-19 pandemic made online classes a new commonality, many international relocators used private schools for their children. In many cases, expat families would seek out private schools that offer classes in their native language.

This option provides relocating students with familiarity as they can still interact in their own language. The good thing about this option is that in many of these schools, they do teach the curriculum in the destination’s language so that children still learn their new language at a great pace. It’s an obvious point out, but this option is probably going to be the most expensive.

Advantages of Using an RMC for International Relocation

Learn the Advantages of working with an international relocation management company

Interviewing and hiring international job candidates can be the best way to open up your company’s talent pool. When jobs are only offered to local or domestic candidates, it can be hard to assure that the most qualified employee is filling the seat. But when your company can field applications from all over the world, it can give countless more options for getting the person with the best skill set for the position.

There is also the case of global assignments; companies with multiple international entities, multinational projects, or in expansion mode often need to fill specialized roles with knowledge and skills that may not be readily available locally. So, the company may need to send them to another location for a set period. Additionally, foreign assignments provide employee development and career pathing.

So, what’s the best route of action to take for international relocation services? The first recommendation would be to work with a relocation management company (RMC) to hash out the global relocation benefits that your company is willing to offer new employees. Working with a qualified and experienced RMC covers your bases for bringing on a new employee from another country. It’s not just a domestic move where the company can pay movers on the employee’s behalf. There are tax rules, immigration compliances, and other factors to be covered.

When conducting global mobility practices, teaming up with an RMC is the best way to go. Here are some vital relocation services that an RMC can provide:

1) International Relocation Policies

Each international relocation assignment is different. Each employee will have other wants and needs. So, there is no one-fits-all relocation package. That does not mean making up a process as you go for each new hire. It’s essential to have policies set in place to ensure some order when the new employee signs.

The process starts with an unbiased needs assessment where the RMC conducts the initial call to determine the employee’s and family’s needs. From there,  a policy review is conducted, and proper expectations for the assignment are set for international transfer. Suppose there is no assignment or transfer policy in place. In that case, it is highly recommended to work with an RMC to develop an international assignment letter, which serves as a written agreement on salary and benefits for the transfer process.

A qualified RMC will be able to assist in setting up some common relocation policies to include benefits and services aligned with your policy objectives and budgetary and compliance requirements. For example, key services within a typical assignment or transfer policy may consist of:

  • Corporate housing options
  • Home-sale/home-buying assistance programs
  • A vetted list of moving companies
  • Spousal and family support initiatives
  • Visa and immigration
  • Travel coordination booking
  • International expense and compensation
  • Language and cultural training

2) International Relocation Costs

One of the most significant advantages of working with an RMC is cost control. It’s no secret that getting an employee from point A to point B can be expensive, even more so for an international move. When you work with an RMC, they can help keep costs in line because they provide a list of experienced vendors. Any great relocation service provider will have this list of vendors vetted and verified for top service. But the best way to save on relocation costs is to work with an RMC that accepts multiple bids in the pre-decision stage. If an RMC gets multiple bids from vendors on moving services, they can help assure that your company can provide relocation benefits without breaking the bank.

3) Immigration Compliance

A critical service for any international assignment or transfer is Visa and Immigration. Effectively managing and maneuvering through compliance laws can save your company time and money. Most RMCs will have a team that can handle all of the immigration services needed for your new employee and their family.

Working with a top-ranked RMC can help you make sure you’re covered when it comes to:

  • Passport application assistance
  • Document procurement and conditioning services
  • Post-arrival filing services
  • Work permit applications
  • Business visa applications
  • Entry clearances
  • Derivative family permits
  • Extensions of any of the documents mentioned above

4) Tax Compliance

Effective tax planning requires an understanding of international tax laws and how these laws apply to the employee’s new destination. This is why working with an RMC for global tax compliance needs gives your company the advantage of having experienced experts on hand. In addition, relocation tax professionals dedicated exclusively to the tax issues impacted by global mobility will know precisely how to handle the new employee’s tax needs.

5) Household Goods Shipping

Moving an employee’s household goods to another country is not an easy task. When it comes to household goods shipping, teaming up with an RMC can make everyone’s life easier. There is a lot to handle when it comes to moving personal belongings. But an RMC can assist in handling all the details from start to finish. Including, as mentioned before, gathering multiple quotes to find the most cost-efficient company to hire for moving services. Most RMCs will also have relocation technology that may even help track where the employee’s household goods are in the process.

What Is Global Mobility?

A Definition of Global Mobility and Why It’s Important

Global Mobility refers to a company’s ability to make its workforce mobile. You will also hear it commonly referred to as talent mobility and can even be better categorized as relocation assignments.

Nowadays, countless companies are trying to expand globally due to leveraging technology to reach new audiences. However, if businesses want to succeed in expanding internationally, they will have to manage their talent pool. The best way to do that is to have global mobility policies set in place.

There are various assignment types for companies setting up for global mobility, from permanent country moves to short-term international assignments. The ability to mobilize your workforce and provide relocation services for new employees widens talent pools to further depths. That assures your company is obtaining top talent.

Any company looking to work with international relocation specialists to set up talent mobility policies should know that each company’s talent mobility needs are different. Why Are Global Mobility Strategies Important?

Talent mobility is highly beneficial for international growth-focused organizations. However, before moving staff members overseas, it’s essential to consider various mobilizing factors, such as immigration requirements. A strategy set in place with a qualified global mobility service provider ensures that each employee’s international deployment process is seamless.

It should also be noted that the global marketplace is constantly changing for each industry. Therefore, you should work with your human resources team and global mobility consultants to review and update your strategy annually to reflect the current international mobility offerings of your competitors.

Once a global mobility strategy is created and implemented, global deployment is more cost-efficient, consistent, and compliant. All this leads to the best possible relocation process for your employees.
